![]() BEHOLDER 5E STATS DNDBEYOND HOW TOIn truth, there's no book explaining how to balance a beholder, they're possibly among the most complicated creatures. And that's trying it's best!īut in truth, a beholder's strength doesn't come from damage, it comes from it's multiple save-or-lose abilities: between the Charm Ray, Sleep Ray, and Petrification Ray, assuming a 50% save chance, a beholder can take out a party of four in 3 rounds. BEHOLDER 5E STATS DNDBEYOND FULLThis shouldn't be a surprise: a floating eyeball with 180 hit points and an average DPR of 14 isn't all that scary until it starts shooting magic all over the place.Īssuming the beholder goes for full damage every round, we're looking at a Disintegration Ray (45 force, 0 on a save), a Enervation Ray (36 necrotic, half on save), and a Death Ray (55 necrotic, 0 on save)Īssuming saves happen 50% of the time, we're looking at a DPR of 75, which is on par with a CR 12. What we can gather from this is that the beholder's eye rays (and anti-magic cone) take it from approximately a CR 7 to it's current CR 13. It's saving throws should be DC 18, but they're all 16 instead. For attacks, A CR 13 should have a +8 to hit, but a beholder only has a +5 (for it's bite), which shouldn't be a huge deal because the beholder should rarely use it's bite attack. Using the DMG "create a monster" section, a beholder has the proper AC for a 13 CR, but it's HP is a little low (just over half of what it "should" be). ![]() It stops characters from knowing what the beholder will do, and it serves to prevent the beholder from using it's most powerful ray round after round. Volo's guide specifically talks about the randomness for a paragraph or two. If so, it's actually quite hard to rate: the eye ray ability is much better than it would have been otherwise, but by how much? Okay, so, for one: are we still working with the assumption that the beholder can't use the same eye ray multiple times on it's turn? No three disintegrations/death rays per round? It's hard to say how much more powerful removing this restriction would make them, but it definitely would. TL DR: the Eye Rays ability is the source of 70%+ of a beholders power. ![]()
